Try putting the shift lever in neutral to start the engine. If that works, it's only your shift linkage/cable out of position. If it won't go all the way up on the lever, it will not allow the lock pin to go into position to lock the steering wheel. The key may not even come out.

Will the shifter move out of park? If not the cable or linkage is stuck. If shifter moves but car doesn't and engine revs. Transmission is slipping and needs repair. If possible have scanned and get code

Perry,is it the brake light or abs light ? check your fluid and also the e-brake handle to see that it is released all the way.On the Nitro's the brake fluid sensor can give some trouble if its exposed to dirty fluid or extreme cold.

I would 99% doubt its a clogged core. Have the blend door checked (its a door that cycles between hot and cold)

Yes, I am experiencing the same problem someone else told me their parents had this problem too and had a new tranny put in and a new drive shaft. Still did it. Finally they got satisfaction through the lemon law. :(

Believe it or not, it doesn't have one. It just has a cap with no dipstick over the tranny fluid fill tube. You have to take it to the dealer, or a shop with the "speacial tool" (dipstick) to measure it. Some speculate that this may be due to the fact that Chrysler has had a bad rap for a number of years related to their transmissions. The don't want consumers adding the wrong type of tranny fluid (dextron) to the vehical thereby creating shifting and other issues. Rediculus if you ask me. Hope this helps.
