have a 97 Cirrus, 2.5L, box is black, near battery, sits on top of ECM/PCM which has wire harness plugs going into top. if not on top ECM should be next to it?
This switch is built in the neutral safety/ transmission range selector switch Located on the side of the transmission under the linkage arm. Drivers side.
It's located on the drivers side of the radiator opposite of the lower radiator hose. Note: you may be better off disconnecting the lower radiator hose, it's common for the drain plug to break or the O-rings to split causing more work to drain the radiator. That's why most tech's will drain the radiator from the lower radiator hose, less chance of breaking the radiator drain plug and most new cars now don't come with a drain plug to the radiator.
check but GM used a heat shield as part of the exhaust manifold gasket to deflect manifold heat away from the plugs and leads and that may be the part you describe
if it is the plugs will come out over the top of it
if you do not have a problem with the engine performance , changing plugs will be wasted effort and money as plugs on an ecm controlled engine last almost as long as the engine
