SOURCE: 1993 TOYOTA PICKUP (V6) TEMPERATURE PROBLEM
the trans will not allow overdrive until coolant reaches roughly 180 degrees, if the guage shows cool and the trans is not upshifting, or downshifts to third while driving. the problem is either a sticking (or missing) thermostat. follow the lower radiator hose to the engine and find the three 12mm nuts, remove these to get to it. a new toyota t-stat will have a little bleed valve on its face. position it upwards when installing. hope this is helpful.
P.S. Happy New Year

If it was the trani I would be waiting to hear you say something like it slams into gear or the RPM's go up but the speed doesn't follow. you can try to shift it in low and manually shift it up as needed. It could be that your truck is not starting out in first but rather second. Am I on the right track, is this what your trying to describe.

May have a loose or bad ground the engine harness sensor circuit.
