It's an internal issue, the best suggestion I have, and what I'd do as a certified technician of many years is simply buy a replacement stereo unit used from eBay or you can check with the local salvage yards and junkyards as they're full of perfectly good stereos & many other parts for a fraction of the price of any dealership! Provide a CD/DVD cleaner disc and clean it maybe it help;
I encoutered that problem 3 months ago, the DVD ROM recognized only few DVD disc, other DVD's won't even the windows is freshly installed. The laptop was return back to the store they replace it.
However, in your case; it work fine before so maybe i suggest you to clean your DVD rom using the cleaner, if not work then , scan your computer with a potent antivirus, if this not work also, maybe i recommend to format and reinstall the system,
If all of those are not working maybe its time for you to enjoy the warranty of your laptop if the laptop has a warranty. hope this help.

Are you trying to playing recordable DVDs (DVD+R or DVD-R) ? if so, try playing original DVDs (the type you rent or buy) those are pressed DVDs - if it works, then your player does not support DVD-R or DVD+R - If you are using a computer burner that supports bitsetting you can change the booktype of a DVD+R to DVD-ROM to fool your player.
If however your player cannot play either DVD-R, DVD+R nor original DVDs and only plays CDs, then your dvd laser diode is finished - there is one for CD and one for DVD, this is rare but happens, there is nothing you can do, any repairs would be very expensive - you are better off getting a new DVD player they are very inexpensive now and any repairs will cost you multiple times a new DVD player.

when you flip it down look up between the display and the front there are screws in there

maybe the spindle motor is defective so it cannot read the disc. just bring that your dvd to sony service center to fix your dvd.
