How old is your vehicle? Grey smoke usually means the engine is burning engine oil. There is more than one reason for this.
The most common is a blown head gasket.
More serious reasons could be things like worn piston rings or an issue with the valves. This is usually more likely on older, high mileage engines.
Get a Good mechanic to check your car over and they'll be able to check for all the possible causes.

Hi, Its a 2012 with 48,000km. It only seems to do it on a auto downshift when you need some sudden acceleration. I get a huge plume of smoke and then after it dissipates its fine. Driving the car normally with gentle acceleration and it never does it. Also, I can put it in park and rev the nuts off it without a whisper of smoke. Does that indicate anything specific? I am in the middle east and don't necessarily trust the garages here to give me an honest diagnosis so would like some idea before I take it in.

This, unfortunately, sounds like a more serious problem. Does it do it when you’ve been stood at traffic lights? If it only happens when the engine is in gear and working hard, (under load), it is likely to be a piston or piston ring issue. Get this sorted soon!! Have a read through the website I’ve attached below to see if it helps.
For advice on garages, go to 3 or 4 different ones for quotes and see which problem is suggested the most often.

Took it to the KIA dealer last night. Waiting anxiously to hear the diagnosis today...

BOOM.... Kia dealer says around 20,000riyals ($5400 USD) to rectify. Says that sticky oil has affected the engine and they need to completely strip it.

Ouch!! Might be worth getting a price for a replacement engine or even a replacement vehicle. Sticky oil means the oil has mixed with something and reacted badly to it! It acts like treacle and gums up the entire engine.

If it hasn’t had a tune up lately then I’d suggest starting there, maybe the smoke os carbon built up on the spark plugs or in your intake/exhaust. I’d change the spark plugs and then drive it a bit, don’t be afraid to run it a little hard. There’s no issue with running the hell out of a vehicle from time to time, the dealership I worked at last made sure to suggest that to all customers, not that they’re any authority, but I know from personal experience it won’t hurt anything as long as your motor is mechanically sound.

Second option, if it has smoke when it starts up or when you get down on the accelerator a bit harder than normal then it may be the inevitable wear associated with high mileage from old valve seals or worn piston rings, etc. That’s nothing to worry about either, if it “burns” oil, meaning it must be added between changes then that may be the issue. If so, just keep it checked and full of oil and it’ll go on for many years, I’ve had vehicles that were so reliable and just ideal, but they needed a quart of oil on a regular basis, or maybe a half a quart, whatever the case may be it’s all good as long as you keep oil in it! See the message below please and best of luck friend!

Thanks, Its only done around 48000km so its not particularly high mileage. It seems to do it occasionally and then wont do it again for a while, even if I run it hard. Its had regular oil changes etc but will try and take it for a tune up.

SOURCE: turbo whistles when accelerating plus occasional

Sounds like you may have a small leak in your head gasket I believe your car has an aluminum block and heads which can warp if ever overheated. I hope this is not the case. Good Luck To You!!

SOURCE: Grey smoke from exhaust

Hi. This will be a turbo issue. It is malfunctioning.

The turbo unit is the power booster for the engine. Its main function is to push air into the engine and is operated by the exhaust gases. When the unit fails, it could cause the turbine to stick, which would cause drastic loss of power or what you are experiencing now, which will be, oil leakages into the exhaust turbine area. This oil leak will, generally, emit a very high level of grey smoke.

Basically, your turbo is damaged. it will need to be replaced.

SOURCE: my car is blowing smoke and shuddering ef falcon

What color is the smoke ? is it bluish or is it white ?
The blue colored smoke would smell more like burning oil, which would indicate a broken piston ring, ect. the white smoke if it smells of coolant(anti-freeze) would lean toward a head gasket problem.

SOURCE: Jag X TYPE Diesel Black smoke coming from exhaust on acceleration

i had this problem and thought the fuel filter oil filter needed replacing so i have just had a service done but problem is still there but not as bad. been told it could be the AGR valve or a split pipe going to it which recuirculates unused fuel back to burn again. therefore unspent fuel is coming out of the exhaust causing the black smoke. i am still looking for the answer aswell, hope this helps.

Kia Sportage 2005, smokes heavily when on motorway, what will the cause be?

First question is what colour is the smoke?
Blue and blue/grey is burning engine oil.
Dark (soot) grey/black is excess fuel, incompletely burnt fuel.
White smoke in some cases is a large quantity of unburned fuel but most often is steam from an internal coolant leak.

Large quantities of smoke usually results in the high consumption of either engine oil, fuel or coolant - it has to be put in before it can be converted into smoke. If you supply further details in the comments section we can try to advise you. Petrol or diesel?

Bmwx5, driving 60mph on carriageway, plumes of white smoke from exhaust then a slight rattling/ knocking sound, also 5 minutes prior to this felt a lacking in acceleration/turbo.

White smoke means your engine is burning it's antifreeze. You have a problem with either: an intake gasket or a head gasket

General rules of thumb: Low speed engine on acceleration with smoke in the exhaust plume = worn piston rings High speed engine accelerating (spooled up turbo) with smoke = oil form turbo bearing and/or piston rings Engine on over run (coasting down, foot off the gas) with smoke = oil from valve guides. VW/Audi make good engines with tight tolerances so none of the above should apply at 62K miles; just make sure that the oil (the right oil) and oil filter are changed regularly.

Grey/Whitish smoke (small amount) rising from rear of engine

Has to be a small oil leak above the exhaust header or pipe...Possibly the rear of the valve cover gasket...because the engine slopes to the rear, oil collects there, and drips off onto the exhaust. (I'm a 30 year retired British Leyland auto tech)
