SOURCE: Recommended type of struts for 2000 Toyota Avalon
II have found over the years that a company called MONROE makes a very high quality strut (around $50 each) and have never had a problem with them, they come in a gas charged strut cartriage and this is what u want, there are others out there but many like BILSTIEN that ride really rough and cost around $100 each

SOURCE: how to replace the cabin air filter in a 2000
This may not be the best way, but it was the way a non-dealer mechanic changed the air filter In my 2000 Avalon XLS (purchased in Sept. of 1999):
remove 3 screws above the glove box, 1 bolt lower left of glove box, 1 bolt lower right of glove box. Pull left side of glove box in to free a protrusion of the glove box. Pop off surrounding dash at top left and top right of glove box. There was a black plastic attachment on the right side of the glove box that was the main problem. This attachment has a hinge between the glove box and the surrounding dash. The mechanic used a screw driver on the lower part of the hinge to pry it away from the right side of the dash; it is held in place by a plastic pin on the outer side of the dash. The hinge was slid back and away from the dash to free the hinge. The retaining pin was held in an open position in the hinge, so it was not lost. Once this hinge was freed, the glove box could be dropped and the cabin filter accessed.
I have to believe there is a simpler way to free the hinge, perhaps by removing a different part of the dash on the right side of the glove box.
