82474 oil pressure gauge was installed with sender 279A and operates. But it pretty much stays buried at 80 psi. It's a 1969 GTX 440 engine. I either have a high volume oil pump or is there another reason the gauge would max out?
The sending unit could be defective but a different oil pressure gauge should be installed at the engine to check on the pressure.Any pump can push 80 psi if the relief spring is defective but if the pump is high volume unit, make sure you have an extra capacity oil pan or you may empty the pan of oil at higher rpms leading to a damaged engine.
The first thing to do is check the pressure with a mechanical gage to see if the pressure is that high. Then you can rule out the pump or other problems.
SOURCE: oil pressure gauge reads past 80
now unless there is a very loud knocking of the motor which would mean that the engine's top end was not getting any oil I would say that your oil guage is sprung and needs replacing. a high pressure rating would indicate a restriction in the oil flow pasdt the sending unit or a plugged oil filter. if the filter were plugged you would know it because your enging would run tight in no time at all. replace the guage itself... please rate this........thanks
SOURCE: oil pressure gauge reads 80 psi with engine off and pegs running
That is probably a defective oil pressure gauge or a broken oil pressure sender, it reads 80 psi just because that is the maximum value allowed.
Pressure can be verified by reading it with a gauge tool.
If you really have pressure over 70 psi when engine is running then start replacing the oil filter, and check that the oil lines from pump are not obstructed, if there is nothing in there then replace oil pump.
If instead the gauge reads 80 with engine off, that is a defective pressure gauge.
SOURCE: oil pressure gauge stays at top, about 80 psi, is this normal
80 is on the high side for those... possibly a sending unit issue
SOURCE: oil pressure gauge is showing max pressure. Figure that sensor is bad???
I agree with you, replace the oil pressure sending unit.
SOURCE: just changed the oil pressure switch and the gage is buried
There was not a recall, but there was a class action settlement where GM agreed to extend the warranty on certain vehicles for this problem. Check www.gmspeedometerrecall.com to see if you qualify.
