Check all the electrical connections and lubricate all moving parts with white lithium grease also known as "lubriplate"
Testimonial: "thanks for input - during the last oil change they said they would make sure it was serviced correctly not sure that would have them check electrical stuff but will ask them. does anyone know how common is a problem with these type of running boards?"

get a couple bottles of gas line antifreeze .. if you don't already use it and add it to the gas.

I had the same problem last week, I took it to the dealer because it was still under warranty. He said it is due to a part that is commonly corroded and needs replacing. I am waiting on the part now. Not sure what it is but I can post when I find out. I am in Wisconsin, so the running boards take a lot of abuse in the winter
SOURCE: Engine will not idle and run when starting in cold weather
Have a mechanic take a look at your throttle position sensor and engine idle sensor. Make him manually adjust them as opposed to just putting in new ones. It may require that you have to have a higher idle than normal. Your underlying cause is going to be that I am sure you have a lot of miles on your engine.

This is not really solving the problem, but my dealer told me that they could unplug the harness to keep the running boards in the down postion. The running boards have to be in the down position to make this happen.
