Vehicle won't start when hot

A common problem that's surfaced a great deal lately is a car/truck that starts fine when the engine is cold but won't when the engine is warm. Most of the time, the car will require a jump start with a warm engine to get it to start. Most mistakenly assume a bad battery and change it out, only to have the same problem. What happens is most starters don't just "quit" when they are defective. A bad starter will usually start your vehicle when it's absolutely cold. Once warm, the starter will behave as follows: <ul> <li>No power</li> <li>Click then nothing</li> <li>All other electrical is fine (headlights, stereo, alarm etc)</li></ul> If your car or truck won't start when the engine is warm, but starts fine when it's cold, you most likely have a bad starter. Although replacing the battery is less expensive, it rarely (if ever) will resolve this issue. Consider the age of the car / starter when these symptoms occur. If you have an older vehicle (older than 5 years) then replacing the starter is a good place to start prior to buying other electrical components (battery, alternator). Always bring the vehicle to a shop that offers a free electrical diagnostic test to confirm the electrical system is sound to rule out an electrical problem first. If the electrical system is sound, I'd go ahead and replace the starter. Although this tip will show under the Lincoln category, it applies to all makes and models.

2002 town and country will not start intermittently. Been checked out at garage. Say they cannot find anything. Most times when try to start all warning lights come on.

Will not start how intermittently ? The engine won't turn over or engine does turn but won't start . Starter relay , lose connection . Checking power an grounds would be the first place to start , voltage drop test the main electrical circuits . Voltage Drop Testing the Starter

The starter circuit control is achieved by the starter motor relay ! It is located in the under hood fuse/ relay box or as Chrysler calls it ,integrated power module ! If you pull out the relay an look on the bottom where the pins stick out you will see four sets of numbers .30,87 an 85,86 ! 30 is B+ voltage . 87 is to the starter solenoid . If you jumped those two spots where the relay plugs into the starter would crank the engine over . The last two 85 an 86 are the control side .If you checked with a volt meter where 86 plugged into ,with key on it would show B+ voltage . The last pin is from the PCM - engine computer . When turning the key to start a signal is sent to the PCM to let it know crank has been requested , in return the PCM supplies a ground to pin 85 energizing the starter motor relay sending B+ voltage to the starter motor cranking over the engine . Here is another video on test from the relay base (where relay plugs into ) This is for a horn circuit but same thing . VEHICLE RELAYS Testing from the relay base The relay could be going bad , you never know .Replacing the relay mite not be a bad idea . Good luck , hope this helps !

1998 Honda Accord Won't Start

Park neutral safety switch maybe be the reason for the no crank ! Try putting the vehicle in park ,then try to crank the engine . Testing the electrical circuit is the best way to trouble shoot this problem , along with do a voltage drop test on the starter circuit ! This will test the battery cables an connections .

Does it have a manual or automatic transmission ? Manual ? clutch switch . Looking at a wiring diagram I also see a starter cut relay !

2003 lexus es300 won't start... radio lights and windows work. Tried a jump start, still doesnt work...

Are you saying the engine cranks but won't start, or the engine won't crank ?
If the engine does not crank, you would check for voltage at the starter, the neutral safety switch, and the key switch as well as the ground connections.

Hi Debbie , Do you know anything about automotive electrical systems an testing ? Viewing wiring diagrams to see what all is involved in the starting system on your vehicle would be the first step ,then testing the electrical circuits for the starter using a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter .

Looking at the diagram I see when the key is turned to start it send a crank signal to the PCM - engine computer , if the PCM gets a valid fuel enable & starter enable signal from the anti-theft system it will energize the crank relay sending B+ voltage to the S terminal on the starter solenoid . That is if the park neutral safety switch is OK . You mite try putting the vehicle in neutral to see if it starts then. These switch wear on the inside that could cause a no start problem . You can test from the crank relay ,watch this video VEHICLE RELAYS Operation Diagnosis In the video he uses a horn circuit , your crank relay works the same .

Will not crank

Naw, not really odd. That usually happens when there is a bad batt ground connection. Remove and clean the battery cables, pay close atention to the negative cable. snug them down and make sure the post is not broken where the bolt goes if it is a side terminal battery. Good Luck_Ned_

Car won't crank & makes a clicking noise when ignition is turned.

test battery voltage , should be 12 volts, also check battery amp draw when you attempt to start engine, you should have 12 volts at the starter solenoid , you could have a faulty starter motor, battery cables and or terminals... even with a good battery check for vltage drop from battery positive post to battery positve at solenoid ... large drop equals bad cable, replace ... just points to check....

Make sure that the transmission is in park or neutral. Possible to have a bad neutral safety switch.

Then take a volt meter and follow your 12volt battery current starting at the battery. Make sure that the relay is getting grounded to activate. Bypass the relay and see if the starter is getting 12 volts. Put 12 volts directly to the starter to see if it cranks.

Sounds like the neural safety switch is not in the exact position with the gear shift. Try this...turn key to start and hold...at the same time move the gear shift around the neutral or park position....let me know if this works.
lots of times this is the problem.

You may have corrosion inside your battery cables or a loose connection somewhere.

If you have a voltmeter connect one lead to the POSITIVE post of the battery and the other to the POSITIVE post on your starter while you have a friend crank the engine
WATCH YOUR HANDS!

This is called a voltage drop test and you should see less than 0.5v on the multimeter while you are trying to start it, if you have high resistance (corrosion bad connections) you will see a higher voltage. 0.5v is the MAX you should see.

Do the same test on the ground side of the circuit, connect to the NEGATIVE battery terminal and the starter case, your voltage reading should be 0.1v or less

I just changed the cabin filter of my ES300. I found the instructions on the manual, under airconditioning and audio. It's pretty easy to do. I bought the filter from Kragen's for $21.95.

You can disconnect your battery for a short period of time, 5-10 minutes should do it. There is no guarantee that the check engine light will not come back on in time, but it will make it go away at least temporarily.If you go to Autozone, 99% of the time they will hook up a code reader and diagnose your problem. It may be a minor and/or inexpensive fix. Please vote appropriately and leave feedback. I hope this helps and good luck.

the starter is in the wright side of the motor under the cruis controls. remove the black cover and youll see it....
