SOURCE: My 2003 Mercury Mountaineer V8 AWD transfer case

the problem is the chain inside strechs, could cause case damage, it will soon break and then truck wont move, depending on how bad it is you may be able to drive a bit more, threres just alot of strain there because of it being awd, if it is noisey it doesnt have to be replaced just fixed,good luck.

You put it in drive and ease forward and turn the steering wheel to the left or right and its like you put the brakes on. 2002 mercury mountaineer awd v8

If the vehicle is made to be a AWD you cannot get it out of AWD unless you take off the front drive shaft
