As far as the hold goes This is a performance shift mode for the automatic transmission. It prevents the transmission from shifting into the highest gear. There should be a button near or on the shift lever marked "hold". It was probably pushed accidentally. The check engine is a separate issue, but usually most part stores like Auto Zone can scan it for you for free and tell you what the most likely fix would be

If you are lucky, you are just out of transmission fluid. Add fluid to refill the transmission to the mark on the dip stick. Afterward, you need to determine where the old transmission fluid leaked out and fix the leak. If refilling the transmission does not fix the problem, you then need to look at fixing the transmission. Are you sure the shift linkage is ok?

well then with the motor warm check the trans fluid level, seems like it may be low or a clogged filter may also cause that, also a torque convertor starting to fail may be to blame. Also the cat. convertor being plugged can cause this issue.. bad wires, dirty air filter, mass air sensor could be dirty, many things come to mind

I had the same thing happen to me. It was a sensor in my gear shifter. It was under warranty so I got it fixed. The dealer had to help me fix it.
