Well if you uphill or downhill and your driveway you going to have to do the push-up or push it down to get the pressure released from the transmission that could be a problem

if your car is a manual / stick shift (USA term) if clutch uses hydraulic fluid check the clutch fluid level. may be low- clutch master cylinder may be leaking fluid.
if the clutch is cable driven check the cable is ok.
There is a possibility the clutch thrust plate is worn out and this would cause the symptom of gears not engaging.
However this would be your vehicle being put on a tow truck and being towed to the mechanics and is expensive to fix / replacing clutch plate.
has happened to me
! My car was not at home but on the road when it failed.
Thanks. All set. My husband was able to fix it!

I would start with the Starter check for voltage getting to the starter should read 12 volts at both terminals
SOURCE: truck starts but won't engage in any gears
if you can move it into gear when its not running, id say clutch,
but if it wont go in at all, then Im thinking shift forks or linkage
SOURCE: how to change gear shift cable on 2001 dodge dakota 2 wheel drive
the cable goes from the shifter to the transmittion arm,, both cable ends connect via a pin and cotter key (usually) the cable housing (black outside layer) is connected to the shifter frame usaually by a clip and is bolted to the transmittion with a couple bolts on the other end ,, i know this was pertty basic but hope it helped
SOURCE: 2.0 dodge neon. stuck n second gear.
