2005 Elantra 142,035 miles Engine light came on - Mechanic replaced gas cap - light still on, difficult pumping gas. Replaced vapor purge solenoid light still on and difficult pumping gas. Help!

Take the vehicle to a qualified repair shop an have the EVAP system smoke tested , this will find the leak . Too many thing's that could cause your problem . You don't want to keep replacing parts do you ? Could be a stuck open purge solenoid , a leak in one of the vapor lines , the part the gas cap screws into, vent valve stuck open . Service engine light on ? have checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . You'll probably fine a evap code for a large leak.

Your code, assuming it was evap related, also means other issues aside from a loose gas cap. Your fuel system "closes" down to purge unburned fuel back through the engine. A loose gas cap will stop this process, as in why the check engine light will go on. Also, there is a vent solenoid, purge solenoid, fuel tank pressure sensor, and a charcoal canister that are involved. My guess, but if you have a bad vent solenoid, you may have symptoms like yours. Any "good" technician can test this for you.

CHECK THE PURGE OR VENT SOLENOID POWER CIRCUIT IS OPEN.CHECK FUSE.YOUR CHARCOAL CANISTER FILTER FULL OF FUEL AND MOISTURE.A BAD GAS CAP WILL CAUSE PROBLEMS.CHECK TO MAKE SURE FUEL VAPOR LINES OR PURGE VAPOR LINES IS NOT CLOGGED OR DAMAGED.

The system consists of a charcoal cannister that collects gas vapors from the fuel tank. It stores these vapors until certain engine conditions are met, and then a purge valve/solenoid opens and the vapors are used in the combustion process. A faulty gas cap will cause the problem if it is not sealing or venting properly. A bad purge solenoid could also not be allowing the cannister to purge and the cannister could be full.
