The first thing you need to do is check to see if the engine is seized. Do this put a socket and breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt then try to turn the engine 2 full revolutions if OK check the smaller positive wire coming off the battery it has a fuse in it and is very susceptible to corrosion, next go to the starter and with a short piece of wire jumper from the battery stud to the smaller terminal on the right marked with a "S" does the starter crank the engine? Now that I think of it the first thing you should do is find another mechanic.

SOURCE: wont start

There's only 2 more things that I can think of, check the fuse for the ignition, then the computor itself, you did everything else.It might be the problem and may not.

SOURCE: 98 saturn sl1 won't start

If the problem occurs after the car has been driven long enough to reach normal operating temperature, the problem is the starter. If the 'no crank' occurs cold, retest the battery.

SOURCE: saturn ion 2005 or 2006 - cannot get key out of ignition

If you have a cigarette lighter or power port, usually you can power up the system by using a jumper battery attached a a probe. connect the negative part of the jumper to any good metal surface. make a tube out of cardboard and insert it into the port, then use a phillips head screwdriver attached to the positive cable and touch it to the center terminal of the port while pushing the trunk button in.Even though the cardboard should act as a shield, be careful not to touch anything but the center contact!!!

the car with a padlock symbol means security system,,,you either have a bad ignition switch causing this issue and or a passlock housing,,,sounds like a normal problem,,,when the ignition switch/passlock housing goes bad it can work sometimes and not others, but it will cuase the car not to start,, i bet there are codes stored in the computer,,you are gonna need to take it to the dealer,,

2004 Saturn Ion. No power at fuse 11 (ignition), fuse good. Vehicle does not crank.

After you disconnect the battery, you have to reset the security system. The immobilizer is stopping the car from starting.

Saturn ion 2006 shuts off immediately after starting

This sounds like a reset problem. Possibly the ignition interlock ( Just another word for Factory reset code needed for your computer.) Usually the little padlock symbol will be on in dash. Removal of the battery could and usually will fool the computer into thinking the car is being hot wired into starting.

I have a 06 ion and battery checks good but the car will not turn over at all, not even a click. could this be a bad starter or starter relay?

If only clicked then I'd say bad neutral safety switch but with no click which is a relay then you may have an ignition switch problem. That's in the steering column coming from the key ignition or the starter relay is fried.

2006 Saturn Ion won't turn off. Key will come in and out and will turn the car on, but since its a manual transmission we have to put the car in gear and kill to get it to turn off. What do I need to...

the ignition swotch on the end of the lock cylinder inside the bottom of the steering column there is a connector that goes to it,,replacde that switch and relearn the switch,,,,after you replace the switchtry to start the car then let the key go back to the run position and let it sit for 10 minutes do this 3 times with 30 seconds between key starts and on the last one wait 2 minutes when done and they try to start it,,,,so its 3 10 minutes learns with 30 seconds inbetween,,
