Your shifter cables snapped (more specifically the connectors at the end of the cables, they are made out of nylon). Not good news 1) the cables are not made anymore you will have to find a place that might have some still in stock or go to a junk yard; 2) it requires dropping the ******; if your not able to do this yourself, you are looking at about $600 if you can even find the cables. I know what I'm talking about because mine snapped about 4 years ago and luckily some were still able to be found and I have a 98 Saturn SL. Good Luck!!! - Stu
Even though your shifter doesn't show 1st gear, your transmission will start out in 1st, then shift into 2nd at around 10-15mph. If you start out with shifter in 2nd, you should feel the gear change. About all the average person can do with automatics is check the fluid, and possibly drop the pan and change filters. sometimes that helps with slipping or balky transmissions, but not always. Good luck, Bill. Maybe somone else has some ideas?
had the same problem 2 months ago. there are 2 shift cables and you have lost 1 of the clips that hold them in place.replace the horseshoe clip and that will solve the problem.
well it got stuck originally right??might be time for a rebuild the cable does need the right amount of tension to push and pull, the linkage may need proper adjusting as well
The cables attach near the back of the transaxle. You may be able to see them under the brake lines. You will probably need to remove the air intake from the throttle body to get good access.
Does your check engine light come on when this happens? It's probably when your tranny goes into limp home mode. You should have 1st gear ( only if you shift it there manually) 3rd and reverse. You are probably experiencing the 3rd gear thing and are probably burning up all of the clutches when you accelerate and should probably take it into the shop before something worse happens. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
