You cannot put plain water in a radiator because it does not conduct heat like antifreeze coolant does. IT boils over fast, which you found out the hard way. The question is where is that water going? Chances are you have a head gasket leak and now water is in the cylinders and they wont fire because the spark plugs are wet.

Have someone do a Block test of the cooling system to determine if you have a headgasket problem seems likely that that is your problem, or pull the plugs connect a cooling system pressure tester and pump ot up to 20 psi or more and leave it there if it drops pump it up again, leave it there for an hour or so and keep looking into the cylinders for evidence of coolant if you see any you have a head gasket problem.

I had the same problem, whole new radiator, new hoses, new thermostat, and still overheating. What the problem was for me...bad radiator cap...all that money and a $20 fix...try it?

Most likely you had a major malfunction internally. There shouldn't be any steam coming from the oil cap. It sounds like you had a head gasket fail or your block cracked, for it to happen as fast as it did I think you have something major wrong. Check your oil again and see if it has a milky color to it. If water has been introduced to it you will see it. Also if the oil is suddenly higher than the full mark then you can estimate how much water is in the oil. Any huge change will mean you probaby have the cracked block, if it's a head gasket you might not see much of a change in oil, but you will need to have it repaired before it will run.

Very possible.Radiator caps are designed to hold a certain amount of pressure. When the pressure is exceeded the spring inside the cap opens to vent the system.Take your vehicle to a shop and have them pressure check the cap as well as the rest of the cooling system.
