Your 2001 VW Jetta is likely equipped with a "sealed" transmission unit. There is no dipstick that you can use to measure the level of transmission fluid in sealed transmissions. Unfortunately, it's a dealer item that needs to be addressed by a qualified mechanic or at a VW dealer.

SOURCE: transmission fluid check on a vw jetta tdi

Never ever bring a jetta to a volkwagen dealer. They will bend you over and rape you.

All you have to do is remove the top plug with a hex wrench.

SOURCE: 2006 vw jetta tdi service engine light reset

With the key in the ignition (but not turned), press and hold the Odometer Reset Button on the right hand side of the panel. While still holding that button, turn the key (although not far enough to start the engine) and then press and hold the Minute button on the left side of the instrument pane(if pressing doesnt work try turning the knob clockwise until service light has gone off and skip the pressing)l. Release both buttons at the same time.

SOURCE: 2001 VW Jetta air bag on and honk won't work.

It's your clockspring. It's inside your steering wheel, underneath the airbag. Controls the electrical connection to your airbag and horn.

Hope this helps!

Hello-what size oil wrench would I need to change the oil filter on a 2001 VW Jetta TDI? Is there a particular brand or model needed?

not really. The TDI's have a drop in filter, and you will only be loosening the cover that the filter rests in. It should be hand tightened from the dealership, so a simple oil filter wrench will work. rubber gloves can sometimes disengage it also.

2001 Jetta VR6, 76k miles. Transmission fluid leaking, occasional short-term power loss. Have gotten the impression from many that newer VWs need (expensive) VW experts. Can I take this to a friend who...

Auto or Std trans??

If auto here's the issue...

Keep in mind Auto transmissions don't like to be run dry.

Also keep in mind that the 01M Automatic you most likely have retails for like $4000 just for the unit, not installation.

The corner trans guy can't rebuild the trans. This is a special unit

Just to check the fluid-

Hook up a Laptop with Vag.Com software installed.

Start the car and go into the transmissions data blocks and go to block 005, this will display fluid temp.

-ATF temperature not above approx. 30C (86F)
-Vehicle level
-Selector lever in "P"
-If ATF is below 30C (86F) bring the ATF up to test temperature.
Test temperature: 35C to 45 (95 to 113F)
-Remove ATF level plug from oil pan.

CHECKING PHYSICAL QUANTITY

If ATF drips out of hole:
ATF need not be topped up.
-Install new seal on plug and tighten to 15 Nm11 ft lb).
ATF check is completed.

If ATF does not drip out
-Remove plug from filler line.
-Fill with VW ATF (G 052 162 A2) until ATF runs out of level hole
-Install new seal on plug and tighten to 15 Nm (11 ft lb).
ATF check is completed.

CAUTION!
Too little or too much ATF will adversely affect transmission function.

No reverse

I would test the trans for trouble codes, Kragen and others will do this for free, if you haven't changed the trans fluid and filter do so, a tiny piece of dirt can cause this condition if it loges in the wrong place, like the reverse command fluid passage..
