Why wont my airbag light go off? Go to see an auto-electrician if the airbag light still won't turn off. We cut the white wire on my son's 2005 ION and followed a youtube video. He said to remove the airbag fuse first. After we cut the wire and put the airbag fuse in, now the airbag light is on. I can't get it fixed for beans. So now he has a security light and airbag light on. He has been in several accidents and the airbags never came out anyway so I guess he will have to drive that way. It did start last night no problem in 30 degree temperature!

The most probable reason for the code is the battery being dead for a while, there is a capacitor in the airbag circuit to make sure the airbag can go off in a collision even if the battery disconnects itself in the process. There is a slim chance it might be something else but either way the shop should be able to tell you what the problem is, and get it fixed; sometimes, scanner reader could helpfull to know exactly what fault code is stored there. keep in mind that this isnt an OBD codes reader, this is more specific for Airbag Systems.

Also, isnt rare to know that the airbag warning light is indicating the airbag(s) may not be functionig. As it says in the manual, "Ignoring the AIRBAG warning light in your instrument panel could mean you won't have the airbags to protect you, (or your passangers), in a collision...have the airbag system checked right away". Always wear your seatbelt. On 2004 there is a light on the passanger grab bar that indicates the passanger airbag is off. This happens when a child is in the seat to protect the child from the sudden force of an airbag. It can also be fooled by a package or briefcase on the seat. This is normal. When an adult sits on the passanger side the light should go off. This information was an addition to the 2004 manual.

just bought 2004 element for my daughter with same problem. dealer said it was a faulty seatbelt latch (the part attached to car) on the drivers side. seems to have fixed the problem. not sure about flashing light, but read might be fault indicator. hope this helps

In most cases this problem is caused by the rotating ribbon circuit contact under the steering wheel having a broken filament, the part is known as a clock spring contact, u will need to properly disarm the airbag and remove the steering wheel to access the part. WARNING: Failure to disarm the airbag system can result in an unexpected Airbag deployment and possible serious personnel injury disconnect the battery 30 minutes prior to start of work.

Mine came on when my car hit 120K mi. I also reset it using a sequence within the car.

Problem Scenerio: turn car motor on, car conducts self test, during which time airbag light stays on for 5-second (or 5 or 6-beeps)..it turns off for a second then flashes 'off and on'...and annoys the hell out of you as you drive...especially at night.

Solution 1: put black electrical tape (band-aid) over airbag light indicator...annoying problem gone.

However, in VA the airbag light can't be flashing to pass the annual car inspection, so....

Solution 2: Reset the Airbag light using the following sequence I discovered and heard about:

1. Turn key / ignition to 'ON' (Do Not Start). and await for the self-testing procedure to end (Air Bag Light stays on for about 5-seconds or '6-beeps')
2. As soon as the Airbag light turns off - turn the ignition to OFF position and count 5-Mississippi's (that's 5-seconds).
3. Then turn ignition back to 'ON' Position and repeat step 1 & 2 again.

Conduct Steps 1 & 2 - Three times in a row.

After the 3rd or successful timed sequence, allow the car to go through it's complete self testing stage and as soon as its done the airbag light will flash...but at a slower pace (That is good!) That means the cpu is resetting. Once you observe the slow flashing airbag light, turn the car off, then start it normally and the airbag light 'should' reset (not flashing and bugging the **** out of you).

Then, take the black electrical tape off the dash panel and throw it away.

Common fault on FORD
Usually due to a poor connection in the YELLOW PLASTIC CONNECTOR underneath the passenger seat.
Just push it together properly and it should clear the AirBag fault

If you do not fully understand the airbag system, you shouldn't mess with it. Airbags can be as dangerous and deadly, as easily as they can save a life. Your airbag light is telling you that you have no airbags at this time. It's worth the expense to get the system fixed by a professional, rather than chance a collision without operable airbags.
