Speedometer freezes when dash brighntess increases

When driving with the headlights on, the speedometer freezes when you increase the brightness of the instrument panel. If you decrease the panel brightness, speedo works fine. Replaced the headlight switch...no change.
No problem with headlights off. This car has the rally gauges option.

Remove the cluster and inspect the positions of the bulbs. One may be dislodged and somehow affecting the meter.

Check all wiring under the hood and check the shortstop fuse located in the main fuse panel should be metal or thicker than the other fuses if that doesnt fix check the relay

SOURCE: dash gauges to include fuel

GM had gauge cluster problems from 2000-2005. Bad stepper motors. On those units you have to replace the cluster or rebuild it with new stepper motors. Dealership can fix for around $150.00

there is a regulator for the display brightness, you may have it turn'd down or it has stopped working;. it controls the brightness at which the dash lights are. usually has a speedo sign on it. goes up and down. it works with the main light and is conecter to them on the same lighting board if it has gone then a new light swtch control switch will be needed.

Blown Fuse or fried Circuit board. Take to a local AutoZone, Advance, Murray's, O'reillys or a similar part house for them to check the wiring. I'm assuming the van does not use a mechanical Speedometer or Fuel Gauge.

On the plus side, with no speedometer, your indicated odometer mileage does not increase. Just keep your speed down and your tank full. Kidding, just kidding.

My 2004 Aveo's great! Except I have a question, how come there is no lighting to help me see the speedometer better at night?
There should be a switch on the left side of the dash for the lights there will be a dimmer switch there also it is most likely turned down adjust that switch to brighter that sould do it but if you have no lights at all then you have a issue inside your dashboard

Yes dim the light panel. Their should be a small knob somewhere on the dash on the left of the steering wheel that you turn to increase or decrease the brightness of the instrument panel.

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4.7 speedometer flips around when headlights are on bad, and rarely when they are not on.
Sounds like a "bad" earth on the dash head unit. Also check enging to chassis earths, gearbox to chassis, battery to chassis etc.

Malfunctioning speedometer
The odometer circuit drive and the speedometer are controlled by the CPU built-in the gauge assembly. The CPU receives pulses from the PCM. The pulse rate increases as the car accelerates. The frequency and duration of these input pulses are measured by the CPU.
