Tachometer, speedometer to zero - no loss in power

OK, my car sits around thinking of new ways to freak me out. Here's one for ya:

When the car is in gear (driving, clutch not depressed), the dashboard brake indicator will come on and the odometer will flash twice then go out. Then the tachometer and speedometer step down to zero in tandem. They will then return to normal, the brake light will go out and the odometer will come back. Roughly thirty seconds later, the process will repeat itself.

This does not happen when the transmission is disengaged - either in neutral or the clutch depressed.

During this event I do not lose power. I can accelerate, gun the engine, even engine-brake.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Clay

Additional info: The battery indicator began to illuminate dimly every time this occurred.

When I turned off the A/C (I live in Houston), the problem stopped. I just replaced the accessory belt in October.

Note that the SL does not have power steering.

SOURCE: Tachometer not working on 1999 mercury villager

his problem is caused by the failure of the circuit board that operates the tach needle, you will have to remove the instrument panel then the tach from the panel and send it out for repair to an authorized Nissan electronics repair center, contact your local dealer for the name and number.

Get a GOOD small Phillips screwdriver and remove the plastic screw in the middle of the moz-screenshot.jpgmoz-screenshot-1.jpgmeter hood sub assembly. You may have to hold the outer plastic ring of the screw to keep it from spinning. Sometimes they are hard to get out,(try not to push up on the screwdriver and once it starts to come out you should be able to pull it the rest of the way). See pic circled in red.

Carefully pry away between the sub assembly and the upper dash with a flathead screwdriver wrapped in masking tape. Once it is movable lower the steering wheel all the way down and pull the sub assembly out.
Remove the Phillips head screw on the top of the meter combination assembly. At the bottom of the assembly you will find two little metal tabs, push each one back gently one at a time while moving the meter out. Disconnect the two plugs at the top of the assembly. Once removed I would replace all the lights. Why do this again?

Do you have engine code showing by chance? It's possible the crank sensor is bad or the connection to the ecm or pcm to the instrument cluster circuit board needs a look. If you need schematics check out www.promanuals.net they specialize in Dodge Ram service manuals.

Why does the tach and speedometer now spike when starting engine?

depends. newer vehicles do this just for effect, basically for you to go "ooooohhh" however with older vehicles ( pre 2006) this could be a code that the computer system is giving you, if the needle spikes all the way to the end of the speedometer/tachometer then back down to zero, its most likely effect. but if the needle spikes to 3 numbers (ex-90, 60, 30. then back to zero) its trying to tell you theres something wrong under the hood, could be as simple as a fuse or 02 sensor...

Speedometer is stuck under zero

Pull the rubber trip reset pin out slowly so all you see is the hole & the shaft. Take a long tin-tie (about 5 inch) & fish it inside the speedo to the needle & carefully bring it back counterclockwise when its back at least to "2-3 O'clock" hold it & turn your switch to coil...the needle will go back to zero. keep the tin-tie in your coin box if ever it happens again!

I install a new speedsensor but now my speed tachometer its not sinchronize. if am going about 30 mph my tachometer its in 60 mph

Let's get specific... ok?... Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)... could also be a defective micomp in your cluster. Here's the best solution... have it 'diagnosed' by a professional.. this way you'll know EXACTLY what the problem is and the PRICE of repair... maybe you'll fix it yourself... ya think?

All of my gauges except the tachometer and speedometer go to zero after driving for 10-15 minutes. windows wont roll down a/c quits working and radio loses power?

You got an open in one of the wires that feed your ipc, radio, power windows and a/c. Look around the engine bay for a worn out wire harness where there could be cut wires. Would probably be the harness that goes from the main fuse box trough the firewall, and by the way, make shure there's nothing (wires for electric brakes for exemple) that went trought the firewall's harness gromet. People have a bad habit of cutting the harness wile fishing wires trough there.

Both speedometer & tachometer not working, both reading wrong.

There was a recent class action law suit settled with GM for this exact problem. You can google gm speedometer lawsuit and get lots of information. Unforutunately for most people I think the warranty was limited to 7 years and 70,000 miles. Which isn't a lot of miles for most people.

If you car isn't covered by the warranty there is a way to "reset" the speedometer.

You can turn the ignition slowly like you are going to start the engine. There is a very small "dead" space where you will see your guage lights go off.

What you want to do is cycle the ignition switch from off to that dead space. Each time you do it your stuck speedometer will move towards zero about 10 mph. So if its stuck on 40 you will have to cycle it at least 4 times.

At first you will probably actually hit the ignition and the engine will try to start.....just release it and try it again.

I know this because I have a 04 avalanche with 80,0000 miles and it has this problem about twice a month.
