2005 Saturn Ion problem starting

All of the warning lights suddenly came on and it seemed as though it was going to stop running at any minute. I was close to home and was able to pull into my parking spot and shut the car off. I waited a few minutes and tried to restart it...nothing. The battery light in the dashboard would come on and stay on. After several tries, it would not start (it wouldn't even make a noise) but all of the lights would come on. The headlights and overhead light would even come on. After a few minutes it finally started. Not sure if it makes a difference but it was only about 15 degrees out when this happened. It has about 72,000 miles. I've never had the battery replaced. How long is the battery life on the manufacturer batteries? Could this be as simple as replacing the battery?

Our car ramdomly doesn't start. It has been happening for over a year. It almost always happens in cold or wet weather. keeping the car in the garage has helped but has just reduced the number of times it happens. It still happens. Already checked the battery which is fine. Can't figure it out.

We have the smae problem do not go down the same road as us... we replaced the battery, the starter and the ignition. We ran a diagnostic and it showed a failure with our security feature in our ignition so that's why we replaced it... for a month it worked great even in -30 C but then it happened again so I did some research and it turns out that its common in Saturns but they haven't recalled the ignition. One suggestion is to watch you amber security light, you turn the key and stop when your lights all come on then wait for the amber security light to go out then turn the key the rest of the way. The other suggestion is to cut a wire but I think that should be last resort as it will void your warrenty of the part.

I just brought my 05 Saturn Ion about two months ago. It has left me STRANDED three times as when I tried to start the car, the engine would not even turn over (no sound at all), however, the radio, lights, etc worked. If you will notice when this happens the pass lock light comes on. After reading much about this, it appears this is an EXTREMELY COMMON problem with the Saturn IONS. Many folks have written to say if you replace the ignition switch this will take care of it. I don't know, I just know I paid $10,000 cash for a car that has left me stranded!! Anybody else having this problem?

Probably something shorting out. This is something that probably isn't going to be easy to figure out. You need someone that can diagnose it in person

SOURCE: We have a 2003 Saturn

Take the car in, and have the fuel pump checked, and maybe the alternater. Something in there is going out. Could even be lose battery cables, or a lose connection. Either way, you should have it checked before you get stuck somewhere.

SOURCE: my Saturn wont start. The battery has a charge,

Its the power somewhere along the chain. So of course first is too check the battery. get a multimeter from harbor frieght.(5 bucks) Set it to D.C. voltage and place the red lead on the positive terminal, black on negative. It should read 12 volts if less, then you have a bad battery. Next jump start the car and repeat with car running, it should read 13 /14 volts. If not altenator is bad. If both are good ,clean battery terminals, nice shinny metal. hook up everthing nice and tight. Now start the car. Good luck

2005 saturn ion won't start, no clicking sound, all lights and accessories are working. what's wrong?

Mine (an '04 Ion sedan) has an issue with it's anti-theft computer programming, in where it will occasionally (maybe once every three weeks) not want to start. What is happening is that the computer is thinking that someone is attempting to steal the car (even though the factory key is being used), and disables the ignition for ten minutes. What I typically do is just turn the key all the way off, and sit until the radio clicks off (exactly 10 minutes), at which point I try again and it starts right up.
It's pretty annoying, but, to my knowledge, the only fix is to get a new computer, and while it's a pain in the ***, it's not worth $600+ to remedy.

This is also a relatively common issue in '98-'02 era Chevrolet Malibus, as well as some other GM cars of that time.

2005 saturn ion that seems to be running fine...The engine symbol light is on? What can cause this?

You'll need to find out what code has been stored. Some auto parts stores will have a scanner that you can use. It could be an evaporative emission code that will turn on the light but the engine will still run fine. If fumes are escaping from a leaking evap system the light will come on. It could be something as simple as a loose gas cap.

2005 saturn ion 3 with factory immobilizer and every day for the last 5 days, I have not been able to start. All the lights go on but nothing will turn the engine on.

It is the ignition coil. It is a known problem, though the dealer will try to make you pay for it because it is not considered a safety issue. The coil misfires in cold temperature causing the car to think that someone is trying to start it without a key. Wait about 15 mintues and it should start.

2004 saturn ion does not start on a regular basis. After trying to start it and you try it again after awile..it starts. The battery is fine and all electrical works.

We were having problems with my son's 2004 Saturn Ion. The first thing that started flashing was the power steering warning, so fixed that by replacing the fuses. It kept flashing and then the coolant light came on and it wouldn't start. The battery was fine and well charged. We finally asked a friend who manages a vehicle service center for assistance. The Ion has a standard transmission and that was the problem. After only 15 minutes, they found the clutch switch was just a little loose. So they tightened it and the car popped right off and all the flashing warning lights disappeared. An easy fix but the car sat in our garage for 6 weeks as we couldn't find the solution!

My horn starts beeping about every 10 minutes.

sounds like you have a faulty relay switch, relay's are contact breakers that open and close when power to them is asked for, ( like small timer switches ),your symptoms sound like this type of fault......

I am not a mechanic and have had no problems with my 2005 Ion-2 but at msn/autos I see that these can exhibit a starting problem because of the ignition switch which they recommend replacing. The part is around $40 & the labor is 1 hr.
