My 97 cadillac deville over heated 1 time on the highway. after filling it with coolant i dont have any problems. why did it overheat that 1 time

I just purchased this vehicle, while driving it home on the interstate after about 100 miles of driving it overheated.. i pulled over and look at the coolant tank and it was super low.. ? so i added a full jug of coolant and topped the rest off with water. i made it home about 170 more miles without any probs. i been driving it about 40 miles a day with no probs and watching the temp gauge. the levels are right where it should be. i check the coolant level daily and it dropped about 1/4 from the very top. everything seems normal now. Im just concerned about why was it so low in the first place. and when i looked in the glove box there is a receipt for a radiator flush, new water pump, and thermostat. there is no leaks. i idled it last-night for about 30 min after i drove it. and the temps got to 222 before the blower kicked it and brang the temps down. this morning there was cooling stains on the driveway im assuming from the pressure hose. but it all looks normal.

If you are using coolant that is mixed 50-50 with water, the water will evaporate. If you are having issues and using straight antifreeze without a water mixture, you may have a small coolant leak or a small leak in the head gasket.

Allow it to cool down and refill system while running with heater on hot. Hopefully this will get the air out of the system. However, if this condition persists, have the radiator checked for hydrocarbons. These engines are sensitive to overheat and you may have blown a head gasket. (hope not)
Good luck!

SOURCE: 1999 cadillac deville overheating

my husband did everything that everyone else did that had this overheating problem. It was so weird that my engine cooled at a light and heated up going down the road. I have a north star 4.6 engine and this is natorious for happening. my check engine light also came on and so I had a diagnostics done which told me my #1 injector wasn't firing , car ran like **** as well. After putting in a new water pump and plugs, ect. and realized injector was good a friend told him we could have a blown head gasket. So just to see if this was the problem I went to buy a bottle of glassbeads and the auto parts guy told us to purchase a bottle of BARS STOP LEAK BLOCK SEALER NOT RADIATOR BUT BLOCK SEALER $31.99 . He followed the directions and we waited 24 hrs. before driving it. What ever the problem was has stopped my car runs like brand new and I am loving it again. no over heating no injector problem, runs great.......I hope this helps. I know its probly a temperary fix but its a fix and now we know what the problem was. SASSY

SOURCE: 97 cadillac deville only overheats on hills it has

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line. It's job is to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage. The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side to near the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

What can i do my 97 cadillac deville overheats changes thermostate, water pump, radiator and coolant what do i do next?

Check that two fans are turning on when you turn the a/c on or when it gets to 222 deg. F according to the gauge, and shuts off when it gets down to 212 deg. F.

May have a problem with relays, wiring contacts at the relays, fuse, or the relays themselves. Also, the fans on Cadillac Devilles from 1997 have multiple speeds depending on demand for cooling.

In summary, I would check fans.

If fans are not working on a 1998 cadillac deville will it cause engine to overheat

Yes when you are sitting in traffic or just sitting the fans come on to cool the engine so if they are not working it will over heat. When you are on the highway the car should not over heat though becouse the wind is cooling the engine at this time.

98 deville 32 valve North Star OVERHEATS after 33 miles of drive ?? does not overheat in town overheats out on highway and after slowing down- fans dont cool motor unless stop engine ,have changed radiator...

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose). The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.
Also note that the cooling fans don't come on until the coolant temperature hits around 225 degrees.
During normal highway driving the fans will very rarely come on(if at all) due to constant air flow through the radiator. They will only usually come on in heavy traffic conditions on a hot day.
But......if you have the Air Con switched on, the fans will run all of the time.

It sounds like they didn't get the cooling system filled completely, there's an air bubble. I had a problem with a 2000 Oldsmobile overheating, it turned out to be the aftermarket thermostat. I bought a stat from GM the problem went away.

I have a 97 cadillac deville why does my car over heats? and does one fan suppose to come on?

Change thermostat and use 50/50 coolant mixture only. Add coolant with car running. Fill up radiator, let everything go into engine, then add more until it is completely full. Fans only come on when car is idle for a period of time while stopped.
