The engine light has been on for over a month, the gauge says the car tends to run hot but it goes down when I turn on the heater. Recently, the heater will blow cool even though the car is warm and when I turn off the car, it sounds like a old coffe pot behind the dash board. The coolant level is fine and there is no leaks that I have found. It's a 98 Stratus with the 2.4 DOHC. I'm guessing heater core. What do you think?
I'm thinking Rad. Check to make sure your rad fan is working properly and coming on when it should. When you turn your heater on & it cools the engine down, that's like a small rad too, and by running it through your heater core, the blower is dissipating the heat, the way your rad & rad fan should be. Double check you don't have more serious problem too. have system pressure tested. Have you been noticing any loss of coolant? Thermostat changed lately, if not, now would be a good time, when rad done. If all else checks out, I'd replace rad.
Your engine is overheating, that is why the check engine light is on almost for sure, have you checked the cooling fan for proper operation? turn on the AC it should run after a minute or two, also the thermostat may be sticking and causing this. The noise you hear is coolant boiling, I know this for certain, it is not a guess, have this checked ASAP or you will blow a cylinder head gasket.
Any engine overheat can and will most times turn on the check engine light, as a pecaution have a trouble code test run by Kragen or another parts store like them, it is free, then we will know for sure the problem with the check eng lite.
