On cold mornings, the engine light goes on, and the car won't start. The battery is fine, the starter is fine, and generally within 15 minutes the car will start up and run fine the rest of the day.

I have a 2006 saturn Ion 3 quad coupe. My friend put it on an egine analyzer and two error codes came up. #'s 101 and 300. One of them was random cyliner engine misfire. He seems to think it's the spark plugs but they don't have to be replaced for 100,000 miles. The anylizer was a Solus by Snap-On tools. I'm not sure what the 300 code was. I am not a mechanic and have had no problems with my 2005 Ion-2 but at msn/autos I see that these can exhibit a starting problem because of the ignition switch which they recommend replacing. The part is around $40 & the labor is 1 hr.
I also have a 2004 Saturn Ion, the issue is the security system. It does not recognize the key, so it has to reset itself before it will start. It is a known problem with the Saturn Ions, I have tried to get Saturn to do a recall on these cars, because it a problem with all the Saturn Ions...Saturn should do a recall. Why should all the shops make money off a defect in a car...I also have a 2004 Saturn Ion, the issue is the security system. First off ,no start how ? crank - no - start - when you turn the key to the start position the engine cranks -starter engages an spins engine but won't start an run or you have a no - crank - no - start . engine does not spin . which of these is your engine doing ?
Sorry the saturn's do not have a inertia switch. But more information would help. Like does the security light activate on the dash, you may have a bad Passlock, Place the ignition key to the on possition for 10 min and then try starting it.
Good luck and let me know how things are going. There should be instructions in your manual on how to get the car started if the Passlock is giving you problem.
It is a common problem on Saturn Ion... You have to replace the pass lock switch. The cost of the part is around $65.00 cdn. It is located behind the key switch.
