The 2002 Elantra is breaking down often. It appears to be a transmission problem. The car appears to go into "shut down" mode, as in it will drop down gears and revs up without going anywhere. Then when it is parked, it will not move unless it is left alone for a few hours, then will work fine again. We replaced input and output speed sensors but this has not worked. Before we changed spark plugs, wires, the water pump, etc but still nothing useful. This problem is Killing Us! It seems the input speed sensor should have fixed it, but it still does not work. Please advise.
You don't say if you had it checked for DTC's - diagnostic trouble codes ? Have a scan tool that views sensor data hooked up . See what the PCM/ECM or TCM is see for input data . Your best bet mite be to take to a qualified repair shop that has the diagnostic equipment an knowledge to find the problem . Rather then guessing an just replacing parts .

The VSS sensor is located on the transaxle .
If the VSS is defective replace the instrument cluster

im assuming that you also have a check engine light on. first have that scanned. it sounds like a knock sensor keeping the timing retarded. was the timing belt replaced recently? if it wasnt mechanically timed properly, it would cause this. has the fuel system been checked for adequate pressure and volumn?

Hi there, I live in Colombia South America and I have a HYUNDAI Elantra 2001 automatic transmission and it behaves exactly like yours. I have the best mechanic guy intown and also the dealer garage take down the whole transmission and nothing changed. It seems now to be something with the electric wiring system.
I would recommend you to have the electric system checked.
Good luck.
