I have a 1989 (4 cylinder 2.0 engine) Toyota Camry. AC compressor runs and I can feel the air conditioning come out. There is enough freon.The problem is that BOTH the fans (one is AC fan and the other is the cooling fan) do not turn. There is no problem with the fuse and when I directly connected a 12 V battery to the fans, the fans work so there is no problem with the fan itself. The engine fusebox relay may have a problem, but I don't know how to check the relays. There are three relays for Fan 1, 2, and 3, so I don't know which relay to look at. How can I check if the cooling fan works? I am worried about overheating if the cooling fan does not function properly.
Probably the temperature sending unit...if not that the relays...they should be relatively cheap and easy to replace...

Check the Tension on your Belt and the Waterpump. I have never Heard of someone Needing to Replace the Entire Motor just for an Overheating Issue unless it has been Driven too far while Hot or Someone Puts Cold Water in a Hot Motor. Check these things first and get a Second Mechanic to check it out Before you Proceed with an Unneccessary Replacement. Please Rate my Response, I need all the Help That I can Get! Thanks!

First are you sure the fans are good. Unplug the fans and hook directly to the battery and see if they turn. One fan is for the engine and should come on when the car gets hot. The other generally comes on when the a/c system is on. If both fans work hooked directly to the battery they are good go to the cooling fan switch or temperature switch (same thing different name) and make sure it is good. This tells the fan to kick on when the car gets hot. The other one kicks on when a switch on the a/c system tells it to kick on. Check and make sure you are getting power to the fans. Get a test light and ground it to a good ground on the car and probe the plugins going to the fans and insure there is power coming to them when the car is running. If no power fuse is bad or the sending unit is bad.

The over flow cap should be replaced, it don't hold pressure like it should and causes an engine to overheat. And the thermostat, it let water run though the engine and some engines will over heat without one. But if you never had one then you should be fine. Try the cap, a auto store can usually do a pressure check.
