1995 Jeep Cherokee chugging - minor backfiring won't excelerate

Purchased  used - told about problem and that the new fuel filter, tank and pump took care of it but it didn't. getting cold up here in NH and it now doesn't happened on early morning commute but during afternoons it does. Can be driving along 40-50 mph and starts lugging / bucking sometimes has a minor backfiring sound. one time it happened for 7 1/2 miles and I couldn't get it to go faster than 30 mph - never shuts down completely. stops behavior when I take foot of gas pedal. Last 3 days during the afternoon commute I turned heater on full blast and it didn't do it at all first two days and only at the end of the hour ride home today.  Multiple trips back to place of purchase with no solution. Nothing showing up on computer. Very curious and frustrated.

My 1993 cherokee did the same thing. I also had changed the fuel filter and pump and it did no good. ...mine turned out to be the electric fan wasn't coming on (the relay was bad), and it was running too hot.

Sounds like it is running lean because of fuel not getting through or air getting in. Taking foot off pedal means the air fuel ratio changes and the engine can run ok at low revs. Has the hot wire on the fi been checked. The last time this happened to me was in a alfa when the crud in the tank blocked the final fuel filter into the carb. The fuel system has several filters so check them all.

Is there a access panel in the 1998 grand Cherokee jeep without dropping the gas tank

I replaced the fuel pump in a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport without having to remove the gas tank. Maybe you can too in your '98 Grand Cher. If your fuel pump is accessed from the upper front of the gas tank-above the rear differential-then you should be able to remove the pump with the tank in place. It was easy on that jeep of my son's, took only about an hour or two.

How to replace fuel filter on 1995 jeep cherokee sport?

Hi,

it IS on the inside of the drivers side rear frame. In between the back wheels and the gas tank. You have to the pressurize your fuel system first unless you want gas every where. Take your fuel pump relay start the jeep until the fuel in the lines get used up. then put your relay back after you disconnect the battery, than take the filter off, put the new one on, and then hook your battery up and start the jeep. it will run odd for a minuet but after it builds the fuel pressure up it will be smooth again.

Good luck.

Oh and don't smoke while your doing this!! :

Where is the fuel filter located on a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited?

Location of the fuel filter on 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is in the fuel tank and is part of the fuel pump assembly/Module system. It's exactly in front of the fuel tank on the Driver's side. The fuel filter lines have tabs on them pinch the tabs and pull the line off. Good luck!

Tp fuel pumps from same year different wireing

What you brought is an tank and unit from 1995 JGC. from 1993 till 1995 they have the same fuel pump. 96'er Jeeps start with OBD - Systems and they have other fuel pumps. You can't change the plug ins, because you may have other fuel filter in your Granny. Check filter and fuel lines if they fit with the unit you brought. If not, you need another unit from a real 96'er Jeep

1988 cherokee chugging.....

Rust in ther filter means rust in the tank. There is a primary filter attached to the fuel pump inside the tank. Before you go further, replace that filter & wipe out the inside of the tank as well as you can.
Then check operation of pump and how it runs.
Good Luck

Jeep won;t start..new fuel pump installed

try the fuel filter and make sure you have proper oil pressure!! Remeber if you have tried craking to many bad times then the plugs are going to be fouled out!! Means that they are going to be drowned with gas and need replacing!! Also make sure your fuel pump is coming on!! You should hear a hissin or a hummin noise back from the fuel tank!

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee chugs after it warms up. I've changed the fuel filter and it is still having the same issue. Could it be some sort of sensor?

Hi G. Sanders,
I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport which I love and has a K&N filter and approxmately 140k miles. I'm not sure if we are having the same problem but here goes; within a few minutes of cranking up, my Jeep goes through a "chug period" for a few minutes. During those minutes it seems it is not getting fuel.I cannot trust it to pull out in traffic because it seems to lose power during this time as well and sometimes backfires. After a few (maybe 3-5 minutes) it's fine. It doesn't matter whether it's 35 or 95 degrees, it does the same thing. I've had a Jeep "Expert" to look at it and put it on a computer but could not identify the issue. I cannot offer a solution unfortunately but hopefully some Jeep "Angel" can. It is very dangerous and I'm hoping someone can offer some advice. Good luck Jeep buddy.
