Tip & How-To about Cars & Trucks

How to find difficult vibrations

Not long ago we had a 2008 Suburban 4x4 come into the garage with a vibration when turning right. After looking at the suspension, tires, bearings, and brakes, we came to the conclusion that only when turning right at a moderate speed the anti-lock system would engage causing the vibration under the floorboard. Further studying could not find any reason for it to be engaged. Speed sensors were ok as well as all mechanical parts.

We came to the conclusion that the computer was receiving bad information. After further investigating we concluded that the owner had put on larger than OEM tires causing the readings from the speed sensors to show on turns that one tire was spinning too fast so the computer was activating the anti-lock. After we reprogrammed the new tire size into the computer, all was well.

2008 chevy cobalt violent vibration arouhd 55mph ok below and above speed have replaced joints tires struts, vibration still there

Warped rotors or out of balance tires can cause this. Have you had a front-end alignment after putting these steering/suspension parts on? When replacing these parts IT IS CRITICAL TO HAVE ALIGNED. Also, Have you checked condition of front HUB/WHEEL BEARINGS?

99 jimmy vibrating when i drive it. u joint? how to tell which one

You will have to get under the vehicle, and grab the drive shaft at each u-joint. Grab the first one, and move it up, down, and side to side to look for any play. Also pay attention to missing pieces, and missing clips that hold the u-joint in.

Another thing to check is your wheel bearings. Jack the rear up, and grab each tire at 3o'Clock and 9o'clock first, and then 12o'clock and 6o'clock. Wiggle/shake it looking for play. Do the front tires the same way. You should find it.

Most common reasons for vibrations

Uneven tire wear (alignment)
Unbalanced tires
Universal joints
bearings
drivetrain
