How to check and repack your wheel bearings

When should the wheel bearings be repacked with new grease? The number of miles range from 20,000 to 40,000 depending on the type of driving that you do,
where you live. If you drive long distances at high speeds or drive on wet roads, repacking should be more regular than in town driving in mild climates.

After you have removed the wheel bearings, wash them in solvent with a mild bristle brush. Inspect for binding, wear, scratches, heat discoloration, and bent or damaged cages by slowly rotating the bearings slowly. Replace if you see any of these. Dry bearings with low pressure compressed air then wrap them in a cloth towel that is clean and lint free.

Clean the hub area of drum and clean the spindle of vehicle you are doing the repack on.
Using a pressure packer in better than doing the pack with the palm of your hand. Make sure that the lubricant is completely worked through the bearing cage and rollers. Add a small amount of grease to the spindle and bearing races. Always install new grease seals.

How do I grease the wheels and what brand grease do I buy?

If you are repacking front wheel bearings on a car with disc brakes, you will want to buy wheel bearing grease suitable for the higher heat generated by the disc brakes.Any name brand wheel bearing grease will work as long as it is rated to be used on vehicles with disc brakes.
TIP: Do not wash the wheel bearings in solvent to clean them if they are in good shape and have no metallic particles in the existing grease.Just repack using the new grease to push the old grease out of the bearings. After wiping the hub clean add some clean grease evenly into the hub, install the repacked bearings and new seals and JUST SNUG the nut which adjusts the bearing and install a NEW cotter pin.

How to fit front wheel bearings Which brand to use for quality

If the car is front wheel drive a puller is required to dismantle the hub a rather involved job better left to a mechanic .If rear wheel drive do the following. ( Applies to front wheel drive also.) Chock rear wheels, loosen front wheel nuts, jack up car, fit safety stands, remove wheel , remove grease cap from axle. remove split pin or locking nut on axle ,Remove hub, with a punch drive out the grease seal ,the tapered cone bearings can now be removed, the 2 bearing cups still in the housing will have to be pressed out ,all old grease has to be cleaned out. the new cones must be repacked with high temp bearing grease . tap in the seal with the lip facing inwards , slide on the hub fit the outer cone to the axle , the spacer and nut goes on next, tighten the nut to seat the bearings , spin the hub make sure its free to spin, back off the nut one eighth of a turn fit a new split pin or lock tab. fit grease cap and road wheel.

Grease wheel bearings

Hi... You remove them with a 20-24mm wrench. Wash them in solvent in order to get rid of the old grease, and repack them with high quality bearing grease that you can obtain from a regular part store. Pack as much grease as possible in them, then put back. You should be good for another 50,000 miles.
