Just before a car runs out of gas it will speed up the idle (rev up) backfire and then die. You are probably experiencing a lack of fuel. Put a pressure gauge on the fuel rail that goes to the fuel injectors. It should probably read between 5 and 15 lbs. If the pressure is bad, it could be a fuel pump or clogged fuel filter. Obviously it is cheaper to start by changing the filter. The line could also be clogged. If it has good pressure all the way up to the fuel rail, it could be clogged fuel injectors.

hey, im not a professional but ive dealt with crappy a4ld's for about two years. just from what youve said it sounds to me like youre pump may have gone. it happened on my first one. if you remove the bellhousing it is directly behind it. there are 6 or so bolts. a new one can be purchased at cobra transmissions, however if the pump seems intact it could be a million other things. if i were you and you have some know how, buy a stick shift ranger and swap it out. its really not hard. if you have any questions email me at
