Is your engine an automatic? If yes - The engine diagnostic should pin point the problem. Which could either be the air flow sensor, idle sensor or the throttle sensor needs replacing.

Have you checked the fluid level? if not do so with engine running in park and e brake pulled Also look at the fluid is it brown in color and smell sort of like onions? if it does it needs a filter and oil change. most cars require the filter and oil to be changed every 30,000 miles. Also add Lucas transmission additive so that it will soften the seals and clutches. If you want to do this yourself let me know and I can give you instructions, however it can be messy. the transmission will take 12 quarts of fluid dexron III and the lucas oil conditioner. Most early 90s GM trucks have the fuel filter mounted on the inside of the drivers side frame rail about the area of the drivers door. If it's not found there look on both inner frame rails, it will be on one of them between the front and rear tires.

Use a flat tip screwdriver, or small chisel to wedge the slot open gently, then push the shaft up toward the inside of the car with a pry bar. You may have to let the gearbox move away from the shaft to get it to come completly off.
