Dakotas and Durangos are notorious for intermittent failures of the crankshaft position sensor. If you get a shutdown like someone just turned the key off, then this is a likely suspect. Fortunately, they are relatively cheap and easy to replace by the DIYer.

ECM are very prone to damage from inexperienced fiddling with multimeters. Take it to a service tech or auto-electrician with a scan tool computer that can read the whole system with the ECM connected. Question edited for clarity Question moved to Dodge Dakota That is a whole of 'new'. You need an auto-electrician. Some ECM need to be programmed with the vehicle VIN Number. You also need to verify the new one is a working one. The ECM controls the fuel pump and the anti-theft. Only a professional grade scan tool can do that.

a bad crank sensor or dist pickup plate can cause this.... check the fuses in the fuse block under the hood for any blown ..... a bad auto shut down relay may cause it .....try putting a test light on the green and orange wire and see if it lights up when you try to crank it

Tammy...the only way i know to get a fuse panel diagram is to buy an owners manual..and you can probably find them on Ebay or Amazon..but if ya need to know a specific fuse number..i probably can help ya...i hope this helps...Keith

on the fuse box lid, there is NO fuse listed for cigarette adapter. As all OEM outlets are fused, I suspect it located somewhere else. I wanted to find out where that was at.. anyone??

There is a idle control valve that may need replacement, This is a 50 dollar part and easy to install. Before that try running 5 in 1 STP gas additive first. If you have been putting in cheap gas this might be part of the issue. Chevron gas only for a while.
