They are absolutely pulling your leg if they're telling you that you have 7 glow plugs. It sounds like they don't have a clue about TDI's.

Are you having problems with your heating/cooling? OR did you get a check engine light and found out about P0380 when you brought it to the shop?
You more than likely have an issue with your glow plug harness. The connectors on the glow plug harness (where they plug into your glow plugs) prob need to be cleaned. Read this thread too:

Once again, not enough information given. How many miles on unit? When you say does not downshift do you mean when you press hard on accelerator pedal, or when you slow down? When you say does not shift into overdrive do you mean high gear or torque converter does not lock? The cars are know for transmission problems and while sometimes you get lucky, usually they require a rebuild or replacement. How often do you replace the fluid and filter?

They are not designed to open from the outside. Why can't you get inside?

Erase errors try basic alingment with diagnostic and come back to me seems you have sth more than a quick fix

The sensor that triggers it maybe faulty connect disgnosis and see the temperature that the sensor sends info to the ecu
Your dash knows ur temp but the engine ecu doesnt it might sends a -40 c signal :)

the transmission works properly after restarting so mechanically the transmission is fine Run the fault codes to determine the problem area ( TR, TCM, VSS ,solenoids and servos) check for wiring harness problems and water in the connections

Expensive or cheap, it has to be done. Bite the bullet my friend and just do it if you want to keep your cool.(pun there) Thing is, those units are quite sticky and may need replaced. It's not something you do yourself. I'm good with electrical systems and electronics, but I won't even touch that.

Have someone diagnose the transmission. Sounds like the torque converter locking up when it shouldn't and not when it should. It can, of course, be from other problems, like low/contaminated fluid. The battery light coming on when it stalls is normal(as well as the oil warning light).

check for faulty switch.
