Any common problems with electronic fuel gauge?

Mine reads empty all the time. The wiring harness to the dash multi gauge was damaged and I thought when I replaced that it would be O.K.

Sounds like you have a grounding problem. check and make sure that the sending unit is grounded. should fix the problem unless the sending unit is bad...

Gas hand on my Volvo v40 doesn't work. Has a new fuel pump. Any ideas on why it's not moving? Has a full tank of gas but showing empty.

If the fuel pump and fuel gauge sensor shares the same housing as is often the case - maybe the person that fitted the pump damaged the sensor or float...
Alternatively it could be a wiring or connector problem, defective gauge or printed circuit.

Fuel pump wiring diagram

there is two things : fuel gauge and dash fuel gauge. The fuel gauge in tank rated to 0 to 90ohms.disconnect wire at the tank take a variable resistor connect it to wire .read the dash gauge if it move as you move the resistor. if ok fuel tank gauge is at fault

Fuel gauge Stuck

The most common way to find out is to test both components.
The sending unit in most vehicles grounds the gauge on the dash.
You would unplug the sending unit - pump harness at the tank and ground the sending unit wire. If the gauge climbs up to full the sending unit is at fault.
You could also measure resistance in the circuit in the tank when the tank is close to empty and after filling it up. The resistance should be different each time.

Fuel gauge reads correctly then goes to empty

9 times out of 10 the fuel pump/level sender assembly is the cause. Sometimes the gauge pod is faulty, and there have been cases where there were either poor connector pin fit issues and/or chaffed/melted/cut wires in the harness that leads back to the fuel pump. It is an extremely common fault and would be surprised if the pump/level sender assembly wasn't the cause.

I hope this info helps!

My fuel gage is reading full at all times and the radio will not come on is this a fuse issue or two different issues?

You definitely have two different issues as the fuel gauge and radio are on different circuits. The radio could be a blown fuse, which would require finding a short circuit. The fuel gauge could be as simple as a bad connection at the sending unit or a lost ground on the fuel tank. Disconnect the fuel gauge at the tank and with a twelve volt test light well grounded probe the harness terminals with the key on (engine off). The fuel gauge should move when the sending unit wire is probed, and the test light should light dimly. Other terminals are a ground for the sending unit, a ground for the fuel pump, and power for the fuel pump. If the gauge moves when the sending unit wire is probed the problem is either the sending unit or a bad harness connection. If the gauge doesn't move during the probe there is a wiring problem (open circuit) or a bad dash gauge. Hope this helps.

The fuel gauge is'nt working.I tryed to ground it

When testing a fuel guage you should disconnect the wires to it,guage should read over full, ground the float wire, turn off key then turn back on should read empty. You have to cycle the key for guage to move.If still inop the wire is broken in the harness between the tank and the dash.Voltage on the float wire is low. When tested with a test light it will barely light the light and pulsate. This test indicates the wiring is good.

1997 sonoma fuel gauge not working. Shows empty or just above empty all the time.

Possible in tank sending unit .Disconect tank harness and jump 2 wires (not pink/ black) to verify harness and gauge .If gauge moves with jumper, you will need to proceed with tank removal in order to access the top lock ring which secures the assembly and service the sending unit.

Fuel gauge error

The best way is to use a gauge tester to vary the resistance to the dash gauge. You will need to unplug the harness back at the tank and connect there. It will either be a pink wire or a yellow wire to the gauge.
